The film synopsis according to IMDB is “Based on the unbelievable, inspiring true story of a team of underdogs – a struggling, working-class gamer, a failed former race car driver, and an idealistic motorsport exec – who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.”
Gran Turismo Review
I’ve always loved the video game series and have played it ever since it was released on the PlayStation many years ago. It’s always been great and it is one of the most well-known video game racing simulators in the world. This film is loosely based on the true story of a video game player of Gran Turismo who was so good at the game he became a race car driver in real life.
I had no idea any of these events took place and they only really happened recently, but somehow I didn’t hear about it. I watched this movie not knowing too much about Jann Mardenborough and when the movie finished I googled him and found out so many things I had no idea about. It’s kind of amazing that this kid became a race car driver out of what in essence was a marketing event promoting a video game. It’s very interesting.
As a film, it’s a lot of fun to see at the cinema. My favourite memory of the film was the sounds.
The cinema is a great place to go and see this if you love the sounds of fast cars driving around the race track. There’s no shortage of racing scenes and the sounds are the best part.
The acting is good. Archie Madekwe was decent in this film. David Harbour’s character, Jack was maybe my favourite, lots of great scenes there. I did kind of think that Djimon Hounsou needed a bit more screen time though, his character’s appearance was minimal.
This movie I’d say is comparable to Rush (2013) and although Rush is the superior film, Gran Turismo isn’t bad to watch. It’s actually surprisingly good for what it is.
If you’re planning to go to the cinema to see Gran Turismo get ready to be blasted by loud racing sequences and get your ears prepared for some of the best car racing sounds you’ll likely hear at the cinema in 2023.
