The Ice Age series is one of those film series’ that has been around for a really long time now and I remember being still in school when the first one came out. Back then Ice Age was one of the most popular things being released for kids, it was up there with things like Shrek and Toy Story. Little did I know that so many years later I would be watching the fifth Ice Age film and even reviewing it on my own website. Over the year’s I have come to know all the characters well and was excited to see what these characters are now up to.

Watching the trailer above will set you up for knowing what the plot is about. Basically little Scrat is still chasing that acorn that he’s been chasing for all five films now and somehow he ends up in space and causes a massive asteroid to come hurtling towards planet Earth. It’s up to the characters we’ve come to know and love such as Manny (Ray Romano) and Diego (Denis Leary) to come up with a plan and save the world from a type of destruction that would rival that of the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.
The animation in this one is well done, with characters looking as good as they’ve ever been. Colours are all very bright and vibrant and a lot of the animated effects look very nice in the cinema. I saw the film in 2d and was happy with how everything looked. Directors Mike Thurmeier and Galen T. Chu did well to balance things in the film, with the pacing feeling fast, but not too fast that the plot moves too quickly to understand.
The script is fairly well written and for a film that’s the fifth one in the series, things definitely don’t seem like they are slowing down. I wouldn’t be surprised if a few more Ice Age films were scheduled to be released sometime in the future. It seems there’s quite a lot that can be done with these characters, although I guess it would be hard to top going to outer space in the next film, but it’s possible. Some things in this one may be a bit lost on some kids though, there’s a lot in there about love and marriage, but I guess that’s something that’s in a lot of classic Disney films as well, so it’s probably nothing to worry about.
Jokes are funny, I heard a lot of children laughing and laughing all throughout the film and as an adult, I found myself smiling and even chuckled a few times throughout it. Musical scores are all great too and the sound effects were enjoyable.
I do think that both kids and adults can enjoy Ice Age: Collision Course, it’s a fun film, packed with jokes, action and a story that’s easy to follow. While I don’t think there’ll be many out there claiming this is one of the great kids films of the year or anything, there is nothing really wrong with this movie, it’s still very good. If you have kids who you want to take to see something and this is in the cinema you go to, you can’t really go wrong with it.
