Kingsman: The Golden Circle Review – Spoiler Free
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014). The film comes directed by Matthew Vaughn who fans will know as the same director who brought us the first film the series. The film stars Taron Egerton. Mark Strong, Hanna Alström, Julianne Moore, Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges and Elton John.
For fans of the first film, this sequel will give you the visit back to the Kingsman universe you’ve been waiting for. The film, just like the first is filled with spy film parodies, crude jokes and a bunch of celebrity cameo’s and stars.
One of the things that is most appealing about The Golden Circle is the cast, there’s a good bunch of people here and all of them put in great performances. It’s not often in films that we get a female villain up against a mostly male cast, but Julianne Moore who plays the evil woman known as Poppy, really does great here. She’s got a lot of funny lines and does well with giving the impression that her character is a bit mad.
Taaron Egerton who plays the film’s main character Eggsy does well, but I do feel, just like with the first film, he’s somewhat overshadowed by a cast of big names who seem to always dominate their scenes. Once actors like Colin Firth or Channing Tatum come on screen, to me, they always seem to be the more interesting ones to watch. Which is a bit of shame I think because the main character here does have some good things going for him. There might have been more the director could have done to make the main character more defined as the centre of this film, even most of the trailers don’t even have Taaron as the first name on the screen.
The action scenes in The Golden circle are all a bit of fun. If you remember the first film well, you’ll know that there’s a lot of quick killing scenes, mixed together with some slow motion sequences, with a bit of explosions, bullets or occasional arm breaking. It’s a little violent, but the tone is a ‘fun’ one so it’s unlikely the violence will bother many. Although in the Golden Circle there might be a few scenes in there that might make you a bit queasy, especially when it comes to seeing how Poppy’s (Julianne Moore’s) burgers are made.
As far as sequels go, I wasn’t expecting too much out of this one for this film series. While I know that many do adore the first film, I wasn’t the biggest fan initially, although I came to like it after my second watch through. This second one does hold up well and although it is missing Samuel L. Jackson, the return of Colin Firth was appreciated and again, Julianne Moore did do well. The humour is still all there and as something to go and see at the cinema for a bit of fun over the weekend, this is certainly a good choice, I certainly chuckled a few times during the run time.
Overall Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a decent sequel to a film which many movie goers came to adore. It’s got an excellent cast who all seem to fit into their roles perfectly and the film brings with it enough laughs to make the purchase at the cinema this week worth it. I recommend watching this if you like the first film, spy films or any light comedy/action film.
