Passengers Review

Passengers is a science fiction/love story film which comes directed by Morten Tyldum who some may know as the director who brought us The Imitation Game (2014). Passengers stars Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Sheen and Lawrence Fishburne. Passengers is about a group of people who are travelling to a far away planet and are put to sleep as the journey takes more than a human lifetime. However, two of those passengers wake up way too early, 90 years early! What will they do with all that time and can they go back to sleep?

This was a film I was looking forward to seeing as I do really enjoy watching both Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence at the cinema and both lately have been putting out some pretty great films. I’ve not seen the two work together before, so was really looking forward to seeing that as well. Both Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence were great together in Passengers and had good on screen chemistry for this science fiction love story. As it is pretty much just them on the ship except for the occasional appearance of Michael Sheen and Lawrence Fishburne (who are great by the way), it’s important that the two lead actors are good ones to keep things interesting.

Characters are well written in Passengers. Chris Pratt’s Jim is funny and also quite likeable and experiences different emotional moments as the film progresses, it’s difficult not to like the character as he comes across as just super nice. Jennifer Lawrence plays the very beautiful and young writer, Aurora Lane, who gets woken up early as well and is like a friend/love interest for Jim. The whole film experience is lovely really and I felt quite relaxed watching this movie at the cinema. It’s nice to take a break from all the tense action films that are constantly released.

That’s not to say you’re just watching two people on a ship fall in love slowly though, there’s some great special effects in Passengers as well. One of the things I really loved in the film was the design of the ship that they were on and especially the outside shots of what it looked like from the outside. The special effects were really well done. There are also quite a few action moments later in the film when the two characters need to fix some broken things on the ship and that was fun to watch as well.

I do believe that the film’s director Morten Tyldum has done a great job with Passengers and while it’s a film that probably won’t get any awards attention on the level of The Imitation Game (2014), I do believe what he made here was something delightful. It had a fun and relaxing tone to it and it seemed like a movie that was just a fun, but a nice time at the cinema.

Overall Passengers was a delightful film experience with two very charming and very talented actors who play some very interesting and well written characters. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are two of the most entertaining and delightful people to watch at the cinema at the moment and they’re great together in Passengers. I found myself enjoying this film as lot more than I thought that I would before I went in to see it. It’s a really nice movie and I don’t think it will disappoint many who go and see it, I’m happy to recommend it to anyone to go and watch it.
