Black Label Media producers shed some details on the sequel to Sicario.
When questioned about the sequel in an interview by THR, Black Label Media founders confirmed a draft of the script has been handed in, penned by Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan, and stars Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin are returning.
“Taylor’s a really great world-builder. He’s got that kind of modern Western voice, which is in vogue right now. And he did it again [with the sequel],” Black Label Media founder Trent Luckinbill said. “It’s a great big world. We can’t reveal the plot, but you’ll see [Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin] all come back.”
There’s no director attached for the sequel, but Luckinbill would like Denis Villenueve to return to the director’s chair (Villenueve is involved with the sequel in an unknown capacity).
“Obviously we would love it if Denis could [direct],” Luckinbill said. “He’s a busy man, but he’s certainly part of the process with us right now.” Villenueve’s next film, Story of Your Life, comes out this year, and then he begins production on the Blade Runner sequel which is slated for January 12, 2018.
The sequel to Sicario was announced last year along with Villenueve’s involvement and Sheridan’s return to write a story focused on del Toro’s hitman character Alejandro.
“You have such a great character with Benicio, who was as dark as he was and still so loved,” Luckinbill said. “That character resonates so well with audiences. People want to know what happened to him, so it’s a perfect foray for us to explore.”
Sicario grossed $46.8 million domestically and $80.5 million worldwide on a $30 million budget when it was released last year. That worldwide number will grow when Sicario is released in Japan on April 9. There’s no word on when the sequel will be released.
In our review of Sicario, we said Villenueve’s directing was “phenomenal” and the actors “all put in a solid performance.” The thriller is now available on Blu-ray and UHD.
