These Final Hours is an Australian film that is both written and directed by Zak Hilditch and stars Jessica De Gouw, Nathan Phillips and Angourie Rice. These Final Hours is basically just about the final few hours before the end of the world. We get to watch a few people live out their last hours on earth. The end of the world is coming and there is nothing anyone in the movie can do about it.

The story for this movie follows the main character James who is played by Nathan Phillips as he lives out his last few hours. Basically what he wants to do is go to this big massive party. But that doesn’t really happen as he gets diverted along the way. In the final hours of the earth there is all sorts of crazy people and there are dangers everywhere. James eventually meets Rose who is played by Angourie Rice and must protect her from the dangers of the world and try get her to safety. The plot of the movie just really focuses on what James does and we follow the whole way through by watching his perspective of things. It’s almost like the plot of this movie could easily fit a video game. It’s the end of the world and James must get young Rose to safety. But to do so he must overcome all dangers in his way and avoid a variety of enemies.
As for the acting in the movie I thought the best performer in this movie was Angourie Rice by far. In the movie before she was introduced as a character I was a little bit bored with what I was seeing so far from everyone in there. But I would say that Nathan Phillips as James was alright to watch but he was just yelling all the time! Jessica De Gouw was also in this movie and I thought she was okay for her scenes as well. But she wasn’t actually really in the movie much at all. Kathryn Beck who played the crazy girlfriend was fun to watch though and I enjoyed her scenes with Nathan Phillips, the movie probably would have been better if she had more scenes.
In this movie I also found the tone and just the overall theme to be very grim. There wasn’t really anything in here to give me hope for the characters or any real relation that I had to any of the characters in the movie. It wasn’t that they didn’t build some characters. James for example was a very developed character by the end of the film. I think it was grim because everyone that he was meeting was either going going crazy and partying, doing drugs or something illegal. Others were committing suicide before the end of the world came. It’s sort of like, where are all the people who are doing good things? There wasn’t really much hope in there and it was like pretty much every character int he movie had given up. I didn’t really find this a fun movie to watch.
I’ve not watched a Zak Hilditch movie before and actually I think he did quite good here in directing this film. I do imagine that the budget for this movie was quite low but he did a good job with what he had here. Also there is some quite good special effects in the movie so overall a good job directing this. It didn’t really have any distinct music or sounds in the film so I can’t really say much on that though. The only thoughts that I had with the directing is that I always knew when something bad was going to happen. The camera always panned around the character slowly and everything went quiet and I knew something bad was there, I just had to wait for it to happen and then, it did…
Overall this movie was okay. I do review a lot of movies on this website and I don’t usually get bored, but I did a little bit in this one. I would not say it’s a bad movie though. It’s just I think it’s probably not a movie that I really could like. The story didn’t really appeal to me and after a day thinking about it, I didn’t really get anything out of this movie. Other than seeing some good acting performances from some of the cast and probably discovering a new director, I don’t really have much else to say about this one.
