Rentrak has revealed the top ten most rented and purchased movies of the first half of 2014.
You may notice the “*Excludes NBC Universal…” message at the bottom. A reason is still unknown as to why Universal movies aren’t on the list but according to Rentrak’s press release, “Although Universal titles are excluded from the charts, Universal ranked as the number one studio for movies purchased and rented digitally in the first half of 2014 based on overall transactions and retail revenue.”
Eight out of the ten movies were nominated for some sort of Academy Award (sorry Katniss and Thor) with six of them being nominated for major awards (sorry Bilbo and Irving), and five of them being nominated for Best Picture (sorry Elsa). Other Best Picture nominees not listed include: Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, and Philomena (none of those are Universal films for the record).
From this list I rented Frozen, Hunger Games and I bought American Hustle. I didn’t expect Bad Grandpa to be up so high!
