Triple 9 is an action crime drama with quite a lot of big hollywood names such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot and Anthony Mackie. It comes directed by John Hillcoat and written by Matt Cook. It’s a heist story set in a very dangerous neighbourhood with dangerous people and some dodgy police officers, it’s got lots of action and a lot going on.
The biggest draw card this film has is the mixture of great actors it brings with it. However I felt from watching this that there were just too many characters and too many people to keep track of and things never really got interesting. Gal Gadot for example is only in this film for a few minutes it seems and almost didn’t need to be there at all, while the main characters were so uninteresting I just couldn’t wait for it to end.
Generally I do enjoy these action crime films and was a big fan of last year’s Sicario but this one didn’t really do much for me at all. While I don’t mind violence in a film at all, this was a bit too much and most of the time I thought it unnecessary when looking at the story and what was going on.
There’s a lot of explosions and running around and also car chases and things like that, which if you’re going to see this film just for that element, you’ll probably be satisfied enough with what you get here. It does have some good Woody Harrelson scenes and occasionally Kate Winslet did something cool, but it’s not phenomenal it’s just okay.
Overall this movie is only just okay and it’s helped quite a lot by some big name actors who raise the standard higher, but I still found it a bit boring regardless of this and the accompanying action. I’d say this would be better to watch once it’s available to rent at home to spare you the cost of a disappointment. There are better action films releasing this month anyway to see, so maybe pick one of those instead.
